I protect the grain that my family lives on during the dry season. Here you can see a granary like the one I used to protect being filled with pearl millet. This granary has two doors. Right now the lower door is being used. As the granary gets fuller, the upper door will be used. You can't see it in this picture but someone is inside the granary, arranging the millet as it is passed in through the lower opening.
This is a male granary used to store millet or other grains. See the platform of sticks at the bottom to make it hard for the rats to climb up? A female granary is used to store cloth, household and personal items and food that doesn't normally attract rats. A female granary will have a shorter shorter platform.
