Why do I look like this?

Form

Dogon Granary Doot

I was the door on a male granary for the Dogon people in Africa.  I am made of wood and carved all over with important and scary symbols like crocodiles.  You can see my hinges on the right side and my lock on the left side. I am made of carved wood panels held together with metal staples and wooden pegs.  Even the door lock is made of carved wood. Both woodcarvers and blacksmiths are very important to the Dogon.
