Ashanti
The Ashanti people were initially hunter-gatherers in the Gold Coast jungle of Ghana. Trading gold for slaves allowed them to clear jungle and create agricultural villages starting in the 15th century. By 1700 these villages had been united into the Asante Kingdom which ruled most of Ghana untill it becam a British colony in the 20th century.

Adinkra cloth was originally worn only by the Asante kings. Wearing adinkra has spread to the rest of the Asante but is still used primarily for ceremonial purposes such as weddings, funerals, and other important occasions. |

Ghana is on the Gold Coast of africa, near the equator, with tropical rainforest, lush savannas, and rich mineral resources. The Ashanti region is centrally located in Ghana. While Ghana is rural and agricultural, the Ashanti region is the most populous and urban area in modern Ghana. Ghana is a modern democracy but much of the structure is derived from the Ashanti Kingdom. Many of the traditional Ashanti offices, such as Asantehene and and Paramount Chief are recognized in the Constitution of Ghana. |
