Journey

I started out as a small Leopard Tortoise shell. When the tortoise died, my maker found the shell and made me into a Powder Puff container. She plugged the hole at the bottom of the shell with gummy sap collected from trees. She drilled holes around the edge to attach a hanging strap and pretty beadwork make from ostrich shell and wooden beads. After my owner made me she used me only a short time before a visitor admired me and offered my maker money. I passed from owner to owner until I became part of TUSD's African artifact collection. I'm one of the last of my kind. Because I'm such a pretty container, Powder Puffs like me became very popular and San makers didn't wait for the tortoises to die of natural causes. Leopard Tortoises are now protected by law and new Powder Puffs are made from pieces of cattle horn now. |
