Journey

My journey began when a group of San found an abandoned ostrich egg. If an egg was found that was still good, the contents would be eaten, of course, and the egg would be opened very carefully so that the eggshell would have only a small opening and could be used later as a water container. My egg was already broken, probably when the baby ostrich hatched. The broken shell was broken into smaller and smaller chips until there were lots of chips about the right size for beads. Then the hole was drilled and the beads were strung on a piece of sinew and rolled against a stone until they were smooth, round and uniform. Finally I was taken to the market and sold to an African trader who sold me to a buyer from the United States. After that I was give to Tucson Unified School District's Fine and Performing Arts department for their Artifact Collection.
