Function

My people, the San, move around all the time and don't want to carry very much. Beads are portable and don't get in the way. The San have been making and wearing ostrich shell beads for 10,000 years. Lately beads like me have become important to the San for another reason. Making and selling ostrich shell beads has become an important source of income for the San. At one time the San could find or make everything they needed. The San do not want to own land (or anything else they can't carry), but their way of life needs access to land and wild plants and animals. The governments where the San live (Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa) are gradually making agreements that give the San hunting and foraging access to some of their traditional hunting areas. Even so, the San now sometimes need money to buy food or medicine. Making beads for sale is one of the ways for them to make money using traditional skills.
