Journey

I started as a calabash gourd like this one. Calabash gourds are incredibly useful as containers and have been grown since antiquity. Calabash gourds are so important that they were carried from Asia to the Americas 10000 years ago.  Wild calabash gourds grow in Africa but have thinner skins than cultivated gourds. Genetic research has shown that the gourds that came to America were cultivated gourds, not wild gourds carried accidentally on ocean currents. After the gourd had dried, a piece was cut out of the round bottom of the gourd and an adinkra symbol was cut into the surface. Then three sticks were attached like a tripod to make a little handle for the stamp.
